I've been seriously looking into making a game/mod and I've started testing games/engines. I was working on my own game engine, but with the current time table it would be finished in about 20-30 years. :D
The candidates:
- Crysis / CryEngine2
- Half-Life 2 / Source
- UT3 / Unreal3
I bought Crysis just for testing the editor and SDK, I don't really like the game that comes with the engine. :)
People seem to always point at Crysis when talking about "VC3", yes it has eyecandy, yes it has nice vegetation, BUT in general it has lousy documentation and none for programming. The editor is BRILLIANT, the best I've seen, it just needs better support from Crytek, hopefully they wake up before the game is dead... One of the biggest drawbacks here is the lack of AI in multiplayer, I sure hope that they fix this, because without it I'm not really interested in it at all.
Half-Life 2 / Source is already quite old and it's never been about the eyecandy but GAMEPLAY, which is the most important thing. We don't play VC1 for the good looks, eh? :)
It has loads of tutorials, code snippets etc. and a huge modding community and there's already more mods that there ever will be for any Crytek game. This is the most promising candidate.
Unreal3, the engine has been developed over the years and it has big modding community and it has some nice mods. I have no experience with it yet, I haven't got the game yet but I've already ordered it to have a closer look at the tools. It seems to have decent documentation and good tools. A good runner up?
In my opinion, the sensible choice is HL2/Source, it's old, it has great support and more players than all the other FPS games combined. But it's easy to get seduced by the eyecandy and sexy editor of Crysis.
This definitely needs more investigation and more experimenting with all three games.
What I've done so far?
- Modified HL2: Deathmatch to include AI, animations work and they kill each other and players, made a custom game DLL
- Modified the nanosuit in Crysis, made a custom game DLL
There's 4 important things to test out with each game/engine:
- How easy it is to implement a new basic game mode
- How to get new objects/buildings/props into the game
- How to get new weapons into the game
- How to get the AI working in multiplayer for co-op game modes
Which ever candidate wins, the work should be started using as many of the existing assets as possible, just adding maps, game modes and other stuff before moving to do a total conversion.
I could try to put together a team, one thing that it really needs is another coder besides me, I can't do everything, I just don't have the time for it. Modellers and mappers shouldn't be a problem, there's plenty of talented people on this forum. :)

DeToX V1.0 released |

DetoX V1.0.
This version has been developed specifically to solve the unbanner problem. It renders the unbanner useless for evading non-IP based bans.
There are two important files that comprise DetoX:
: required for running on dedicated servers.
: required for connecting to DeToX-enabled dedicated servers.
As these files are not stand alone executables- they must be injected into the vietcong process using a DLL Injector.
You can download one .
Simply run the loader.exe, select dtxServerDll.dll/dtxClientDll.dll for the hook DLL, and the vietcong process for target EXE.
What you need to know before installing DeToX:
-> Any player who attempts to join a DetoX enabled server without the client running won't even be able to establish a connection to it (receive time-out noise @ server list).
-> DetoX does not change any files on disk or in memory.
-> DeToX is fully integrated into Vietcong & HRADBA; although not thoroughly tested- it should work with ALL versions of VC/HB.
-> It should not slow down your gaming experience.
-> A client with DeToX active can join ALL servers, DeToX-enabled or otherwise.
-> DeToX enabled servers should have the letters DtX embedded in their server name- to indicate to the players that it is required to be run in order to join.
-> DeToX does NOT contain any viruses- trojans or any other kind of malcious software.
A lot of time and effort has gone into this release; feedback- bug reports etc are appreciated.
P.S. If there is enough support for the project; I will develop it into a complete anti-cheat. |

You may have heard about the Custom Add On: PIMPCONG.
Its been a while since the Project was started and now a very big barrier has been broken.
From now on it is possible to create custom characters ( many thanks to solitude, a former Pterodon employee )!
The PIMPCONG Developers Team has decided to offer Jobs to finish this Add On. You can now apply for a job as Custom Weapon Artist or Custom Character Designer ( of course for the fame only, its a non profit job ).
What skills do you need to apply:
- Knowledge of modeling with 3ds max, preferably version 7 and 8
- Knowledge of texturing with 3ds max, using the Unwrap function.
- Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop for texture purposes
- English communication skills
We prefer:
Experience working with other 3d software such as Maya, Milkshape, etc.

1. Foreword
The main reason why Vietcong does not run with Windows Vista is simple: Direct X10 is detected as "vchook" or "direct3Dhook"
This Tut will show you how to play Vietcong with Windows Vista although we recommend Windows XP for the next one or two years.
The reason:
Vietcong on Vista with actual hardware: 100-200 FPS ( depends on map )
Vietcong on XP with actual hardware: 250-300 FPS ( depends on map )
2. Required Software
--->>DirectX Eradicator (Source: http://www.3dcenter.de/downloads/files/c...-eradicator.zip)
--->>DirectX 9.0c (Source: http://download.microsoft.com/download/4...2007_redist.exe)
3. Changes on Vista and Direct X
Download both tools
Install the DirectX Eradicator and delete DirextX from your PC
Reboot your PC and cancel the automatic new installation of DirectX
Install DirectX 9c
Reboot, you are able to play now ( Hradba and Dedicated Servers tested ).
Do not update to DirectX 10!

| If you can't find any Vietcong servers in the game list, don't worry - Pterodon haven't turned anything important off. Gamespy were doing a routine upgrade and they stuffed something up, causing some issues on their master server. They've said that it should be back up by Friday. |

On March 18th 2003 a game called Vietcong reached the gold status.
On March 18th 2007 our beloved game got its 4th anniversary of going gold.
Vietcong has sold a zillion times, new friendships were made, we all had and still have another zillion hours of pure gameplay fun, clans appeared and disappeared and the spirit of that game is still alive.
On behalf of the whole community i want to thank the whole Pterodon Team for creating that absolutly amazing game. Further i want to thank all the friends i made in this and other Vietcong game related forums. It is all you that make playing that game so much fun.

A long time ago Forrest747, an old community member released a document that he had written - 336 pages of the history of Vietcong 1.
It covers everything in detail from the demo, up to patch v1.30, and gives a great, unbiased view on the controveries in the game (and lets face it, there were a lot!).

Tourmod v1.20 Released |

An update to Tourmod for Vietcong 2 has been released.
You may download it .
I enjoyed Tourmodv1 a lot and I disliked how the manual described DM skins as
'only being cosmetic'. This reason plus many others made me want to update Tourmod.
Using Tourmodv1 as a foundation, I set out to not only update the Tourmod but to
make it more appealing to CTF/DM players. I believe my update to be:
> More balanced
> More historically accurate
> Encouraging use of all classes (not just the commando)
> Better in defining the class roles
The original concept and coding of Tourmodv1 was by Tommy Bonez, John Hannibal Smith
and Chris Tsamados. I (J. Zullo) completed all coding in this update with tutorials
on how to mod by John Lennon. The repellent bottle helmet was completed by Tommy Bonez
and the menu background by Trit. The team at Tour forums, especially Dallas and Osmo,
contributed additional ideas. Their co-operation and aid during the process means that
the coop side of this update should be exactly what the coop community has been waiting
for.
I also want to give a big thanks to the original Tourmod team, their work on the first
Tourmod is unbeatable. It was my awe of their work that made me labour to get this
update completed.
A massive thanks also goes out to Deadly and WiPouT for their help in testing and
hosting the CTF side of the update, also to all the testers from The Meat Grinder and
the Tour team for their help in testing and hosting the COOP side of the update.
I hope that this mod is embraced by both the CTF and COOP communities. I believe that
this mod is a huge step in making Vietcong 2 as it should be played.

You can download the map locally from Auscong .
To install the map, place the NewHope.vc2m file in your Vietcong2/maps folder (you may need to create the folder).

Phreakzoid, a popular community member and modder has announced that they are working with Pterodon to get the VC2 editor released. This news comes just after Shigor, a previous employer of Pterodon, had announced that work on the editor had been stopped.

A beta of a new Vietcong 2 mod, Call for Regression, has been released.
Call for Regression is a mod for Vietcong 2.
Changes
- Classes changed back to the classes in Vietcong, with one extra class.
- No explosive weapons (except for grenades).
- Speed increased, no sprint.
- Iron sights zoomed out.
- Recoil like in Vietcong.
- Supported modes: CTF & ASSAULT.

This is a beta, I did not extensively test it. I made it mainly for CTF, but ASSAULT should also be ok (did not try).

VC2 Tour of Team Respawn Mod |

Chris Tsamados from the Pterodon forum's and the Tour of Team Respawn COOP group has created a Vietcong 2 modification, containing a number of changes to gameplay characteristics and weapons.
This mod was developed initially address the problem the M79, RPG 7, M16/ XM148 and LAW cause on a game, namely a lot of spamming. It does this by removing the LAW from the basic Infantry class and only allowing the more experienced Marine/ Soldier/ Commando access to it. It also removes the M79, RPG 7 and M16/ XM148 from the Marine/ Soldier and Commando classes and only allows it access to the Grenadier/ VC Grenadier classes. These can then easily be limited or removed using the class limiter mutator. So if you want you can have a server without these weapons. The only weapon you will have is the LAW which the Marine/ Soldier can choose, but if you have rpg mode on only experienced players will be able to choose it.
When I had completed these changes I then also went on to make a lot more changes designed to make the game more realistic, these are all listed below.
It is worth noting that when the editor is released I will do a new version that removes the vehicles I added. This is because they have overwritten the M48 and T34 tank files, so when someone designs a map with these vehicles if played through this mod the vehicles will be the M113 APC and P403 Pickup respectively. |

Vietcong 1 v1.00 - v1.60 FULL patch (unofficial) |

Today I decided to create a patch that will take any version of Vietcong 1 up to v1.60. I figured it's annoying having to download and then install the 6 patches every time you reinstall the game, so I thought I'd do something about it.
You should be able to install Fist Alpha both before or after installing this patch; I tested it with both and it worked fine.
The patch should work fine, but if you notice anything wrong with it please e-mail me at fate@auscong.com and I will try to fix it.
Just to make this clear, this patch is UNOFFICIAL and has NOTHING to do with Pterodon!

Finally, Take2 have released the v1.10 patch for Vietcong 2 which fixes the CD key kick bug.

The first retail patch for Vietcong 2 is now available at the Vietcong 2 support page at the official 2K Games web site.
Vietcong 2 v1.10 contains the following:
* Fix of the "CD key in use" bug intermittently seen when playing online.

There has been some initial problems some people have had with the release of VC2.
The major problem people have found is that there CD Key is proving to be invalid. This is likely to be caused by the fact that a batch of CD Keys's were incorrectly activated - a job that was ment to be done by 2K over a month ago. I repeat for our readers that this problem was not the responsibility of Pterodon.
Some people have had problems with the installation crashing, but this has been widely solved by the uninstalling of the VC2 Demo.
Auscong will keep you up to date with developments in these problems - all of which will be hopefully solved by the time VC2 hits the stores here in Australia. |

As Jarek promised a while ago, a new demo (it is an older version than the one we have but it has a different map) has been released, which features the map Tigerfalls.

Neil Davis, who was an acclaimed reporter, covered conflicts in South East Asia for over twenty years. During the Vietnam War, he wished to portrait the horrors in the frontline of fearsome battles. After surviving such reportages, Neil Davis and his soundman, Bill Latch, were killed while filming for BBC.
Today is the 20th anniversary of the death of Neil Davis, the legendary Australian reporter. He was killed on the 9th of September 1985. |
I have read Neil Davis's biography, One Crowded Hour, by Tim Bowden, and it is one of the best books i have ever read. This guy was an amazing man, and had some amazing expierence. For instance, while in Vietnam, he secretley met with the VietCong, and while with them a passing by US Helicopter Gun Ship fired upon them.
Fantastic person, and a fantastic book - I recommend it to anyone. |

PC Gaming World, which is the biggest gaming magazine in Scandinavia, recently published the September issue of their magazine, in which they wrote an eight-page preview of Vietcong 2.
The lead editor of PC Gaming World, Michael Christensen, stated the following: "A pleasure for the eye: There is nothing to complain about when it comes to the graphics. After more than 6 months in development the new design of Auscong is online with heaps of improvements.
Some of the new features include:

That's only a small list of things - take a look around the site and check it out for yourself.
To download files you must now have an account on our forums. Even if you previously had an account to download files on Auscong, you will need to register a new account by clicking here. Please do so; it only takes a few minutes and allows you access to our extensive downloads area. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this but it was a necessary task.
Some of you may also notice that the author for most maps in the download section is set to "Unknown", and most maps have been entered into our system as having CTF only. This was because we didnt not have any information on the maps. If you are the author (or you know details of the map) could you please e-mail us at webmaster@auscong.com, telling us who the author is, what game modes are on the map etc.
If there is a file that we don't have in the downloads section that you think we should be hosting, please submit us the link here (note that you have to be logged in to do so).
While you're browsing, don't forget to submit your clan, fansite, or other link here.

Please remember that the website will still contain a number of bugs. If you come across any of these, please contact us at webmaster@auscong.com as soon as possible so we can fix it.
